Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF), Barcelona, Spain

The Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF) is a public research institution that was created in 1987 by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, the University of Barcelona and UAB and the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) to promote basic and applied research in terrestrial ecology. CREAF is attached to the UAB as a University Institute and is an associated centre of the Institute for Food and Agricultural Research and Technology (IRTA). CREAF’s main objective is to generate knowledge and create new methodological tools in the field of terrestrial ecology and water management and conflicts, in order to improve environmental planning in rural and urban areas. The main activities include research on (1) the function and diversity of natural ecosystems and their response to disturbances, (2) environmental problems that may severely affect the function of ecosystems, such as changes in soil use or atmosphere and climate changes, and (3) the development of conceptual and methodological instruments to assist in decision-making and facilitate sustainable management.

The European Topic Centre on Land Use and Spatial Information (ETC/LUSI), which will lead as part of CREAF the research for this project is an international consortium mandated by the EEA-European Environment Agency to provide information on the main dynamics of land use/cover change in Europe, and related drivers, to policy-making agents and the public. It aims to support EIONET (EU Environmental Information and Observation Networks) and the development of the EESIS-European Environmental Shared Information System. ETC/ LUSI work in close collaboration with European Commission services and international organizations on projects like ESPON, ESDP, INSPIRE and GMES, and involvement in working groups at EU level supporting to the Soil Thematic Strategy and Integrated Coastal Zone Management. Land use-land cover, soil and coastal issue are priority topics.
