About CSCW

PRIO, the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo is among the world’s most renowned peace research centres. The Centre for the Study of Civil War (CSCW) at PRIO, a Centre of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway, is a long-term, multidisciplinary initiative that seeks to understand why civil wars break out; how they are sustained; and what it takes to build a durable civil peace. CSCW’s staff of 18 people includes researchers and eminent scholars from international institutions. Together with about 12 doctoral candidates and selected master students, they bring the complementary strengths of economics, history, political science, philosophy, demography, geography, and sociology to bear on a set of related research questions. PRIO has a long-standing research tradition on the relationship between the environment and armed conflict and is also a leading provider of geo-referenced conflict data. The CSCW researchers involved in this project have published 46 ISI-indexed journal articles and authored or edited more than ten books and numerous book chapters.
